Vancouver: William Hoffer, Bookseller, First Edition. 8vo. Stapled Wrappers. Fine. 64pp. With the famous advertisement for the great Bill Bissett burn out to the last page. This is Hoffer's final catalogue of Canadian Literature, issused before he sold off his stock and moved to Russia. The list is preceeded by the following introduction: "In 1891 Walter Crane, writing to a friend, stated that in the 1860s and 70s he, Ford Maddox Brown, Holman Hunt, Rossetti, &c., declined to exhibit their paintings at the Royal Academy in order to avoid the stigma of its honours. It is a hostile catalogue, but it is also a catalogue of some good and even important books. Two principles guided me in the selection of the books offered here: a book had to be interesting, or it had to permit interesting comment." True to his word, Hoffer has created a highly entertaining and opinionated catalogue of items for sale, perhaps one of the most interesting catalogues I have ever encountered. It is this bookseller's opinion that it should be reproduced for public consumption.
